Events

We regularly hold events for Māori and Pacific students and staff at Te Ara Auaha, the Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies at AUT. Find out more about events for our Māori and Pacific community.

The Wānanga Writing Retreat

The retreat was held at Te Taumata o Kupe at Te Mahurehure Marae in Point Chevalier in June. It was open to Māori and Pacific postgraduate students enrolled in research programmes and staff in Te Ara Auaha, the Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies. Te Pou Māori invited several guests to join as well. Writing retreats allow postgraduate students and staff to spend quality and uninterrupted time writing.

In total, there were fifteen Māori postgraduate students and staff, two Pacific postgraduate students, three staff who identify as both Māori and Pacific and three guests who are non-Māori/Pacific. Postgraduate students came from Tauranga, Hamilton, Ruātoki, Kawerau, Kāpiti Island, Aitutaki in the Cook Islands, Oparure and the greater Auckland region.

There will be a second Wānanga/Writing Retreat from 31 October to 3 November, and it will be held at the same venue.

Māori STEM Camp

Poipoia te kākano kia puawai: Nurture the seed, and it will blossom.

AUT’s first Māori STEM Camp came from an aspiration to be purposeful in sharing a passion for STEM subjects with our country’s rangatahi. The STEM camp was held on campus last year in September.

Recognising the need for stronger representation of Māori across science and technology, we wanted to find a way to share these fields of research and education in a way that could effectively resonate with Māori future students. The concept of the STEM Camp was then truly brought to life by Nicole Manuela and Junior Nomani.

We are passionate about growing Aotearoa’s next generation of scientists, engineers, and technology experts. Poipoia te kākano kia puawai. By nurturing the seed of inspiration for these students, we hope this can blossom into pursuing a rewarding career in STEM and help them find their place in the world.

Māori & Pacific Graduation Celebrations

The faculty hosts a pre-graduation celebration event for Māori and Pacific graduands and their friends and whānau to attend. Faculty staff and senior leaders, and Te Ipukarea Research Institute host the event annually to recognise the dedication and success of the students.

Professor Tania Ka’ai says, “A common theme from graduands and speakers was that it takes a village to educate our people and how grateful they all were for this occasion, where they could celebrate their success as their authentic selves in a culturally enriching context.”
